Machine was hit by some malware and broke Windows Updates, update status was broken in security center and would not get updates, windowsupdate.com was also broken and threw a unknown error. This fixed it for me after removing malware with latest Malwarebytes.
Click Start, select Run and type:
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 atl.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
